Harrisburg – PHC4 has released a new Common Procedures Report (CPR), which displays outcome and volume information for common orthopedic procedures performed in Pennsylvania facilities. For the first time, this report includes the total number of outpatient encounters for each procedure.
PHC4 believes this report serves as an informative tool to assist consumers and purchasers in making more informed health care decisions. Additionally, we hope it will serve as an aid to providers in highlighting opportunities for quality improvement. “Producing this information for stakeholders has always provided value,” said Barry Buckingham, PHC4’s Executive Director. He went on to say, “The ability to add outpatient encounters to the CPR is one more way for PHC4 to support informed decision-making and healthcare professionals.”

Report Highlights:
All percentages noted below are based on the change from Quarter 4, 2020 to Quarter 3, 2022.
• The number of inpatient spinal fusion cases decreased 8.8%, while the number of outpatient cases increased 1.0%.
• The number of inpatient total hip replacement cases decreased 52.3%, while the number of outpatient cases increased 113.7%.
• The number of inpatient total knee replacement cases decreased 53.1%, while the number of outpatient cases increased 74.3%.
PHC4 is an independent state agency formed under Pennsylvania statute (Act 89 of 1986, as amended by Act 15 of 2020) in order to address rapidly growing health care costs. The Council continues to produce comparative information about the most efficient and effective health care to individual consumers and group purchasers of health services. In addition, PHC4 produces information used to identify opportunities to contain costs and improve the quality of care delivered.
