NEW PHC4 REPORT SHOWS HOSPITAL-SPECIFIC RESULTS FOR CARDIAC PROCEDURES
Harrisburg, PA – September 21, 2022 – The Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) released a new report today about the performance of Pennsylvania hospitals for four types of cardiac procedures. Reported are hospital ratings for in-hospital mortality, 7-, 30-, and 90-day readmissions, and extended postoperative length of stay. Also included are volume of cases and hospital charges. Statewide trends and statistics are also examined.
Based on adult patients discharged from Pennsylvaniaâs general acute care hospitals from January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2020, this report includes results for the following cardiac procedures: coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for patients who had a heart attack, PCI for patients who did not have a heart attack, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
âThis report expands PHC4âs already-extensive catalog of hospital-specific reporting by focusing on treatment outcomes for four important cardiac procedures,â said Barry Buckingham, PHC4âs Executive Director. âThese results will help shed light on the quality of health care delivery in our commonwealthâs acute care hospitals, particularly as it relates to cardiac care,â added Buckingham.
In this report, 13,849 hospitalizations were examined for patients who underwent CABG surgery during calendar years 2019-2020. On average, patients stayed in the hospital 6.3 days following a CABG procedure. Of these patients, 3.5% experienced an extended postoperative length of stay, meaning they stayed in the hospital longer than expected. The average postoperative stay for these patients was 19.7 days.
The in-hospital mortality rate for CABG surgery was 1.5%. Approximately 4.1% of patients were readmitted to an acute care hospital within 7 days, while 10.0% were readmitted within 30 days, and 15.4% were readmitted within 90 days.
There were 25,608 hospitalizations examined for patients who underwent a PCI procedure following a heart attack during calendar years 2019-2020. On average, patients stayed in the hospital 2.4 days following the PCI procedure. Of these patients, 3.7% experienced an extended postoperative length of stay. The average postoperative stay for these patients was 8.4 days.
The in-hospital mortality rate for this procedure was 1.7%. Approximately 4.0% of patients were readmitted to an acute care hospital within 7 days, 8.8% were readmitted within 30 days, and 14.8% were readmitted within 90 days.
There were 9,728 hospitalizations examined for patients who underwent a PCI procedure and did not have a heart attack as a primary diagnosis in calendar years 2019-2020. On average, patients stayed in the hospital 2.1 days following the PCI procedure. Of these patients, 4.5% experienced an extended postoperative length of stay. The average postoperative stay for these patients was 10.1 days.
The in-hospital mortality rate for this procedure was 0.9%. Approximately 5.4% of patients were readmitted to an acute care hospital within 7 days, 12.9% were readmitted within 30 days, and 22.7% were readmitted within 90 days.
There were 8,412 hospitalizations examined for patients who underwent TAVR surgery during calendar years 2019-2020. On average, patients stayed in the hospital 2.3 days following the TAVR procedure. Of these patients, 4.9% experienced an extended postoperative length of stay. The average postoperative stay for these patients was 10.0 days.
The in-hospital mortality rate for TAVR surgery was 0.7%. Approximately 4.9% of patients were readmitted to an acute care hospital within 7 days, 10.5% were readmitted within 30 days, and 17.7% were readmitted within 90 days.
