News for Immediate Release

September 4, 2025

Harrisburg – PHC4’s MAPPED 2, released today, is an online tool visualizing the availability of health care services and facilities across the Commonwealth.

MAPPED 2 was designed to help patients, legislators, and health care providers learn more about the health care landscape of Pennsylvania. It enables one to search and filter to easily find services offered by hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and nursing homes, within specific locations. Barry D. Buckingham, PHC4’s Executive Director, stated “This online tool supports patients and caregivers who can use it to find care either by location or by the specific type of care they need. Legislators, health care providers, and researchers can use this tool to explore health care deserts in PA.” Buckingham went on to explain how navigating the ever-changing landscape of care is a key challenge for stakeholders and MAPPED 2 provides the ease, information, and access needed to stay informed.

MAPPED 2 is the second online resource of its kind released by PHC4 in recent years. The first, MAPPED 1, displays ownership of hospitals and ASCs across Pennsylvania. These resources are part of an ongoing strategic effort from PHC4 to support stakeholders by providing tools that are easy to use and understand. This additional resource is worth the effort to continuously bring value to PHC4’s offerings and the stakeholders supported by its work. To learn more about MAPPED 2 and how to use it, PHC4 has built in supportive elements such as Using MAPPED 2 and About MAPPED 2, which accompany the tool.

PHC4 appreciates the importance of publicly sharing resources and fact-based data and recognizes this work would not be possible without the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PA DOH) public reporting, as MAPPED 2 uses reports published by PA DOH. To find out more about the public reporting of the PA DOH visit https://www.pa.gov/agencies/health/health-statistics.

PHC4 is an independent council formed under Pennsylvania statute (Act 89 of 1986, as amended by Act 15 of 2020) in order to address rapidly growing health care costs. PHC4 continues to produce comparative information about the most efficient and effective health care to individual consumers and group purchasers of health services. In addition, PHC4 produces information used to identify opportunities to contain costs and improve the quality of care delivered.
