Data Now Available:

Administrative & Revenue Data: Third quarter 2024 inpatient and ambulatory/outpatient administrative and revenue data is available for purchase. Fourth quarter 2024 data is scheduled to be released July 2025.

Financial Data: Fiscal year 2023 hospital and ambulatory surgery center financial data is now available to purchase.

Cancer Surgery Volume Report

This new report includes data from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024 and displays hospital-specific results for 11 cancer types (bladder, brain, breast, colon, esophagus, liver, lung, pancreas, prostate, rectum, and stomach). Surgeries performed in ambulatory surgery centers and hospital outpatient departments are also reported for cancers of the bladder, breast, and prostate. Summary data over a six-year period is also reported.

Average Margin Trends for Pennsylvania Rural GAC Hospitals, Fiscal Years 2020–2023

PHC4 released a new report, Special Report on the Financial Health of Pennsylvania Rural Hospitals, Fiscal Year 2023. This report is an in-depth look at the finances of general acute care (GAC) hospitals located in Pennsylvania rural counties during fiscal year 2023 (FY23). The analysis reported that there were 64 (41%) GAC hospitals located in a rural county, and of those hospitals, 31 (48%) operated at a financial loss based on operating margins during FY23.

County-Level Utilization Reports

PHC4’s County-Level Utilization Reports, which show the overall total number of inpatient hospitalizations and ambulatory/outpatient cases, have been updated with third quarter 2024 data. These reports display county-specific volume of cases for Pennsylvania residents by patient age, sex, and payer.

Challenges in Rare Disease Research

PHC4 collaborated with the Pennsylvania Rare Disease Advisory Council (PARDAC) to bring new information to stakeholders invested in rare disease care in Pennsylvania. PARDAC and PHC4 analyzed survey responses from the rare disease community to learn more about the needs of individuals, families and loved ones affected by rare diseases. PHC4’s Current Events series displays results of the survey and includes an in-depth examination of why researching rare diseases is challenging.

PHC4 Data: Educating the Future 

Christy Duré, MHA, MPA, is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Health Management and Policy at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health. Over her career, Ms. Duré has taught courses in public policy, public health, and healthcare administration. Ms. Duré has used data from PHC4 in the classroom to teach students financial concepts in healthcare.

In describing her experience obtaining data from PHC4, Ms. Duré emphasized PHC4’s dataset was extremely easy to access. She also uses PHC4 data for other courses that cover topics such as medical debt and utilization rates. She stated, “It was remarkably useful to have authentic data because most of our business cases use fictitious data.” Ms. Duré has used PHC4 data for her own research needs as well.
