New PHC4 TAG Chair
PHC4 wishes Dr. David B. Nash, Founding Dean Emeritus, Dr. Raymond C. & Doris N. Grandon Professor of Health Policy, Jefferson College of Population Health, all the best as he begins his retirement. Dr. Nash served as Chair of PHC4’s Technical Advisory Group (TAG) from 1993 to 2026. PHC4 also welcomes Dr. Edmund deAzevedo Pribitkin, Chief Physician Executive and Executive Vice President at Jefferson Health, and Professor, Deptartment of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Sidney Kimmel Medical College, as the new TAG Chair.

Cancer Surgery Volume Report
PHC4 released a new Cancer Surgery Volume Report showing the number of cancer-related surgeries performed at each Pennsylvania hospital and ambulatory surgery center during July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025. The hospital-specific inpatient volume displays results for 13 types of cancer: bladder, brain, breast, colon, esophagus, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, prostate, rectum, stomach, and thyroid. The facility-specific outpatient volume displays results for five types of cancer: bladder, breast, kidney, prostate, and thyroid.

PHC4 released new data in two interactive resources, MAPPED: Facility Ownership and MAPPED: Access to Care. MAPPED: Facility Ownership, initially referred to as MAPPED 1.0, contains ownership details of Pennsylvania hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. MAPPED: Access to Care, initially referred to as MAPPED 2.0, identifies types of health care services in Pennsylvania counties at hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and nursing homes. Both Mapped resources were designed to provide a better understanding of Pennsylvania’s health care landscape.
County-Level Health Care Reports
Information on specific health conditions and the utilization of health care services within each Pennsylvania county are provided in public reports on PHC4’s website. Whether you are a health care professional, policymaker, researcher, or a concerned citizen, these reports supply essential data to support evidence-based decision-making and analysis within our local health care systems. We invite you to explore these reports to better understand key health care statistics in your area and contribute to the improvement of our state’s health care infrastructure.
County-Level Utilization Reports
PHC4’s County-Level Utilization Reports, which show the overall total number of inpatient hospitalizations and ambulatory/outpatient cases, have been updated with third quarter 2025 data. These reports display county-specific volume of cases for Pennsylvania residents by patient age, sex, and payer.

30-Day Readmission Following Inpatient Total Shoulder Arthroplasty in Pennsylvania – A Statewide Analysis
Christoper S. Hollenbeak, PhD, Professor and Department Head of Health Policy and Administration at Pennsylvania State University, and colleagues conducted a statewide analysis using data from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) and authored a study, 30-Day Readmission Following Inpatient Total Shoulder Arthroplasty in Pennsylvania. Dr. Hollenbeak expressed, “The PHC4 data allowed us to build a large, statewide cohort, track readmissions to any Pennsylvania hospital, and control for key covariates like demographics, comorbidities, and discharge destination. For researchers studying hospital utilization, readmissions, costs, or disparities in Pennsylvania, PHC4 is an invaluable resource. It is one of the few state-level datasets that captures all-payer, all-hospital admissions and allows readmission tracking across facilities. We particularly recommend it for research involving hospital quality and outcomes research in surgery.”
