Harrisburg – PHC4 releases the Common Procedures Report, today, displaying information in two distinct sections of the report for spinal fusion, total hip replacement, and total knee replacement procedures. The analysis includes procedures performed in Pennsylvania acute care hospitals, hospital outpatient departments, and ambulatory surgery centers for fiscal year (FY) 2025 (October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025).
Displayed in the Hospital Results section of the report are hospital-specific ratings for complication and postoperative length of stay for inpatient hospitalizations. Displayed in the Volume Results section of the report are the total case volume for spinal fusion, total hip replacement, and total knee replacement performed in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Statewide trends and statistics are also examined, as well as Medicare payments for inpatient hospitalizations. “Reporting volume data and hospital results in one place allows for succinct access to data about recent experiences in performing specific procedures across the Commonwealth”, stated Barry D. Buckingham, PHC4’s Executive Director.

PHC4 recognizes Pennsylvanians need access to resources that support quickly obtaining and understanding data, and has offered a newly produced interactive display, visualizing the total number of cases performed in the inpatient and outpatient setting in the Common Procedures Report. This new online resource allows users to select a type of procedure from a drop-down menu and use a map to select the reported facilities. This ability to quickly locate facilities, access quality data, and describe choices serves PHC4’s mission and further displays the value of reporting publicly accessible, fact-based data.
PHC4 is an independent council formed under Pennsylvania statute (Act 89 of 1986, as amended by Act 15 of 2020) in order to address rapidly growing health care costs. PHC4 continues to produce comparative information about the most efficient and effective health care to individual consumers and group purchasers of health services. In addition, PHC4 produces information used to identify opportunities to contain costs and improve the quality of care delivered.
