Evaluating the Impact of Pre-Hospital Under-Triage on Injured Patients

Dr. Joshua B. Brown is the Samuel P. Harbison Endowed Assistant Professor of Surgery, Assistant Professor of Critical Care Medicine, and Assistant Professor of Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as principal investigator at the university’s Prehospital Resource Organization and Delivery of Care in Trauma Systems (PRODCTS) laboratory. Dr. Brown’s research interests focus on the impact of triage patterns on patient outcomes in Pennsylvania.  Dr. Brown and his research team used hospitalization data from PHC4 for a study entitled Evaluating the Impact of Pre-Hospital Under-Triage on Injured Patients to compare outcomes between patients who were under-triaged, meaning they were taken to a non-trauma center despite having significant injuries, versus those who were appropriately triaged and transported to a trauma center after injury.

Government Cases from PHC4

These cases are designed for use in an educational setting, and intended to support cohorts looking to engage in learning activities based in realistic scenarios. There are currently two cases developed and in use:

A Research Request from the PA Legislature: A Government Case

Based on the legislation known as the Fair Contracting for Health Care Practitioners Act, Act 74 of 2024, limiting non-compete agreements for providers to a single year and instructing PHC4 to study its impact, this case is technical and data-focused with more attention paid to the collection and analysis of data than to the communication or action.

A 5-Year Strategic Plan: A Government Case

Inspired by the Council of PHC4’s Strategic Planning, this case has some data elements and focuses heavily on strategic thinking around communicating data and engaging with diverse populations and stakeholders.

A Focus on Education

In supporting those across the spectrum of public health and data access, PHC4 collaborates with like organizations and brings you the following educational module from the National Association of Health Data Organizations (NAHDO), Hospital Data 101.
